Arts Councils Update

As our arts councils continue to work with the artists they commissioned, we thought it was time for a little update.

Eastfield Primary and East Park Primary - Ollie Marshall

Both these primary schools have been working with Ollie, creating colourful drawings, patterns, words, and designs on paper. The students will then move to bigger pieces on canvas, culminating in one big artwork painted onto the school fence. Each school is also planning to have an exhibition of the work.

Kelvin Hall - Jay Moy

Pupils agreed they wanted the outcome to explore mental health through an installation using film, photography and sculpture. So, they’ve been looking at installation examples, such as Olafur Eliasson: The Weather Project, Louise Bourgeois: Structure of existence and Tracey Emin: Sculpture - Unmade Bed to see what they like and don’t like.

Malet Lambert - Lauren Saunders

Students at Malet Lambert will work together to create a colourful, story-filled art installation made entirely from paper and cardboard. The installation will show a group of magical animal-inspired or elemental creatures, gathered together in a shared world, taking part in a mysterious ritual. They will explore the identified themes through drawing, sketchbooking, painting, storytelling, costume-making, mask-making and large-scale / theatrical collaborative artwork.

There are three core components to this work…

Alter-Egos - Each pupil will design their own animal or elemental alter-ego through drawing and writing, inventing a name, backstory, special traits, behaviours, motivations and how they might relate to other creatures in the group.

World Building - Students will work together to build a shared story around these creatures, thinking about what kind of world these creatures live in and what kind of message this installation is sending to audiences.

Sharing the Stories - They will also produce a simple zine to act like a ‘storybook’ that sits alongside the installation.

The final outcome will be an immersive paper-based installation at Big Malarkey.

Ron Dearing UTC - Peter Snelling

Ron Dearing will create a series of about 20 micro films with each film lasting less than 25 seconds. Each film will be about something unusual that happened to a group of students on the  morning of the 7th of July. The films will celebrate tiny moments of the everyday lives of young people, which could be animations, fiction or documentaries. They will be exhibited at Ron Dearing as a collection.

Sirius Academy West - Maureen Lennon

Over a course of 12 workshops students will be introduced to the craft of playwriting, experimenting with form, structure, dialogue, content and character. They will then create their own 5-15 minute short plays, and learn how to redraft/ edit, experiencing a professional feedback process through one on one notes. These plays will then be submitted to both Fresh Ink and The Royal Court Young Writer’s Award.

The Boulevard Academy - Steve Arnot

The boulevard Academy are working with Steve to create an anthem around the theme of inclusion and diversity incorporating the talents and skills of the group. The overarching message will be that culture creates co-existence, diversity deducts division and inclusion induces Identity. They are also exploring the idea of creating a video to showcase the song and the group performance.

Thoresby Primary - Jodie Smith

Thoresby students are working with Jodie Smith to create an illustrated book on feelings and resilience.

Kingston Youth Centres Home Educated Group - Anna Bean

The Home Educated Group are looking to create something that incorporates masks, costumes, photography, performance, set building, collage and painting.
