Meet the artists Hull's young people chose

In Generation Hull Arts Councils, pupils don't get handed an artist. They choose one.

Artists send us CVs written for young people to read, pupils pick who they want to work with, then plan the project alongside their teachers and the artist they've chosen, including what they'll make and how they'll spend the budget.

Before we start sharing information about this year's projects, here's who we worked with last year.

Last year's artists

Lauren Saunders, Malet Lambert. Lauren tells wild, wonderful stories through drawing, 3D objects and a bit of theatre magic, and she loves working with eco-friendly materials. Malet Lambert pupils chose her to build a paper and cardboard installation of creatures gathered mid-ritual in a shared world. It went on show at Central Library.

Jodie Smith, Thoresby Primary. Jodie writes and illustrates picture books and runs workshops where children draw, tell stories and make a big creative mess together. With her, Thoresby pupils made Rainbow of Emotions, an illustrated book about feelings.

Ollie Marshall, Eastfield and East Park. Ollie is a spray paint graffiti artist who favours bright, bold designs that are easy for children to join in with. Both primary schools chose him. At Eastfield, 309 children helped make the mural. At East Park, 228 did.

Steve Arnott, Boulevard Academy. Steve founded Beats Bus Records, a mobile music studio that brings hip-hop into schools. Boulevard pupils chose him to help create an original anthem.

Jay Moy, Kelvin Hall. Jay is a multimedia artist. Kelvin Hall pupils chose him to create an installation about mental wellbeing, influenced by conceptual artists and built with projection mapping and animation.

Peter Snelling, Ron Dearing UTC. Peter, of My Pockets, spent a week with Ron Dearing UTC students making a digital showcase of twenty 35-second films.

Maureen Lennon, Sirius Academy West. Maureen is a Hull playwright who believes language should work for you, not the other way round. Sirius pupils are writing short plays with her, with Fresh Ink festival in July 2027 in their sights. The two will carry on working together into the new academic year.

Anna Bean, our Home Educated group. Anna makes dreamlike worlds you can step into and explore. She's worked with the group on showcases for Creative Voice Festival in October.

This year: who will schools choose?

Now it's the turn of our second batch of schools, and each one has an art form in mind.

  • Newland: Musical Theatre with Alice Palmer

  • Oldfleet: Graphic Design

  • Priory: Book/Storytelling

  • Chiltern: Spray art with Ollie Marshall

  • Clifton: Multidisciplinary Art with Jay Moy

  • Frederick Holmes: Visual/Performance Arts - emphasis on the someone who looks like them.

  • Sirius Academy West: Drama and Music with Jack Chamberlain

  • Sullivan: Spoken Word with Ysabelle Wombwell

We can’t wait to see what they produce!
